My name is Phillip Childs, and I am a 40 year old Married  Christian Male, father of one, a Member of the Lawrenceville Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where I serve as Technology Specialist, and I have Asperger's syndrome.  I have lived with Aspergers my entire life, but was not diagnosed until just before my 39th birthday.   I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in November 2012 after living with it and dealing with it without any help or modification of my life.  My life was not what you would describe as an easy one.  My parents were 43 and 38 when I was born.  They had 2 sons that were going off to college and a third who was 10 and in the 4th grade.  I was also either born with or developed soon after birth a condition caused by a sub-arachnoid cyst called Hydrocephalus(from the Greek Means "Water head"), The man that invented it died 12/22/2003 at the age of 87; I have posted his obituary here in tribute. At 3 years of age I received the Measles/Mumps/Rubella vaccine which attacked the shunt and it had to be replaced again. Then, amazingly I went 17 years before the shunt failed again.  My Neurosurgeon, Dr Mark S. O'Brien, Then chief of pediatric Neurosurgery at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta, Now called Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston,  He was a phenomenal man and I wish him well in whatever he is doing now.  He retired from Egleston a couple of years after I turned 21.    I thank God for every day I have to serve Him.   (I'm available for questions any time by e-mail)    But By God's Grace I was born in the perfect time and place with a fantastic doctor who knew what was wrong and was able to be treat for it effectively.  I had a surgery at 1 year of age to implant my first Shunt.  A Shunt is a device that drains fluid; in my case it drains fluid out of my head.  when I was 10 we moved to Memphis Tennessee where we lived in an area near the Hickory Ridge Mall, people in Memphis call it "Hickory Hood" now.  In School I was mainstream, I never received special ed. or other assistance and so I fought for what I got. I have had a lot of failure…   I attended Crump Elementary and had an extremely hard time fitting in and was constantly picked on because I made up all kinds of things, like Blue thunder waited outside the school to take me home, I called our 1981 green chevette a green limosine, and other things that I don't even remember now.  I also had a weight problem then as I do now.  These things caused concern with the teachers and they referred me for a psychological evaluation.  My parents took me to see Anne Hazzard and Dr Douglas J Hart at the Christian Psychological Center and they put me through a battery of tests and said I was of "above average intellegence"  but they did not test for, suspect or report that I had aspergers/Autism Spectrum Disorder High Functioning.  I really believe that was because my dad didn't want a kid with "issues"  to this day he even still denies my hydrocephalus, and I have a valve and tube in the side of my head.  My mom died when I was 14, and that left me without my number one advocate and cheerleader.  I still miss my mom very much because she always found a way to help me achieve whatever I wanted, no matter what it took.   My family and I are largely estranged, not by my choice, but none the less true. I went to college straight out of high school and it ended 6 years later in disaster as I flunked out of college with only 30 hours of freshman course work left to graduate. I tried again in 2007 and because of an unscrupulous for-profit college I am now $70,000 in debt with nothing to show for it.  I have had many issues in my life, I have held many jobs in my life time... over 40 that I can remember.  These jobs run the gamut from Retail(discount store, grocery stores) to pest control to electrician's Apprentice(where I fell from a ladder and broke my back) to telecommunications to computer tech support and my most recent was as IT manager for a lightbulb distributor.   So, now here I am with 30+ jobs behind me in the process of fighting for disability(waiting for my first hearing) which I filed for after being fired from a job that was supposed to be a “protected environment”… I worked there doing all the Information Technology stuff for the office. The longer I worked there the more things got added to my job description. Finally about 7 or so months after starting there the owner’s son came home from college with a marketing degree and no people skill, and at 2 weeks short of a full year working there, managing a database upgrade project, maintaining all the computers, sending mass faxes and rebuilding machines the bosses son shiped in that were not assembled correctly and so damaged in shipping, I was fired.  So, here we are, after trying to work with the organization that placed me there to find me a new job, they classified me as unemployable; telling me there was nothing they could do for me. SO, now I am a house husband taking care of the house  and our daughter Anna.  If you have questions about my faith and beliefs and my personal faith journey to the place I am at now, read my Testimony page .  I earned my Amateur radio license in 2010, and my callsign is KJ4VFO.  I am a net control operator for the sunday night net on the W4DOC repeater of the Atlanta Radio Club, and also an active member of the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Emergency Service. I  Started playing Tuba in 6th grade and still play though it has been a few years since I did.   I would love to be able to start a Computer Managed Services Business but with all my issues, and lack of finances, I don't see it happening.
